OFF TO A VERY GOOD START AT FIRST SALE OF 2008

With an average of €2629 (up nearly €100 per head on the first sale of 2007) and a top price of €5000, the trade for Charolais bulls got off to a flying start in Tullamore on Saturday. Despite the weather conditions the sale attracted a very good attendance and achieved over 75% clearance.
Top price of the sale, €5000, went to Ultan Lynch, Beagh, Virginia, Co. Cavan for MANDELA BARRY. By “Oscar” he is out of “Camber Rita” by “Mogador”. He was purchased by Bernard Ging, Straboe, Portlaoise.
Championship sash went to Jim & Ivan Ryall, Knockane House, Castlemartyr, Co. Cork for KNOCKANE COWBOY. By “Lyonsdemesne Tzar” he is out of a home bred dam by “Falstaff”.
He was purchased for €4,000 by Gabriel Dowd, Woodbrook, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon.

€3700 to Eamonn Lynch, Bailieboro, for a son of “Doonally New”
€3450 to Michael Green, Feakle, for a son of “Doonally New”
€3200 to David Abbott, Killeshandra for a son of “Bova Sylvain”
€3100 to PJ Ryan, Nenagh, for a son of “Doonally New”
€3050 to Gerard O’Dea, Templemore, for a son of “Dovea Pinoccio”
€3000 to Michael Gormley, Elphin for a son of “Mogador”
€2850 to Eamonn Power, Ballinamult, for a son of “Doonally New”
€2700 to Padaigh Farrell, Athlone for a son of “Oscar”
€2700 to PJ Ryan, Nenagh, for a son of “Doonally Nicefor”
Price range for bulls was from €1450 to €5000.
In the very small female section (3 out of the 5 heifers catalogued were present) first prize went to Eugene Donohoe, Ballagh, Newtownforbes, Co. Lonford for BALLAGH BRIDIE. By “Lyonsdemese Tzar” (same sire as the champion bull) she is out of a home bred dam by “Indurain”.
She was withdrawn unsold at €2,700.
The other two heifers (both yearlings) from the herd of Adrian Levis, Town View, Skibbereen, Co. Cork sold for €1600 and €1200.
The next Charolais Society sale is in Tullamore on Saturday 1st March.
