20/11/2008 |
| |
Following on the Blakestown Herd’s outstanding display at the National Ploughing Championships and the herds major successes at both the Charolais National Show and Beef Expo 2008, (where they won the Overall Charolais Championship) the production sale on Saturday (8th November) from the Blakestown Charolais herd, owned by Alicia and Patsy McCabe, Ardee, was an outstanding success, achieving an average price of €4128 for bulls and €3695 for heifers.
Bidding was brisk from the packed ringside, particularly for the bulls. The quality and consistency of the production from the Blakestown stock bulls was very evident in the standard of cattle forward and appreciated by the buyers resulting in a price range for the bulls from €3050 to €5,800 and a 90% clearance.
Highest price on the day €6,400 was paid for Blakestown Crusade, Senior Calf Champion at the National Charolais Show. He is by Blakestown Aster – Overall Charolais Champion Beef Expo ’08 and out of an imported cow who has had 8 calves in 8 years and whose previous calf was exported to Wales.

Charolais X Replacement Heifers
A feature of the sale was the inclusion of a small number of Charolais X replacement heifers all by sons of “Blakestown Seigneur”. (This bloodline was present in 35 of the catalogued pedigrees) The replacement heifers were a credit to the three vendors:
Patrick Whelan, Holdenstown, Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow
Thomas Smith, Lishenry, Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan, and
David Johnston, Primrose House, Redcross, Wicklow,
who were justly rewarded for their top quality stock, with prices from €1300 up to €1750. Such was the interest in the Charolais X replacements that Blakestown intend to offer up to 100 such replacements at next year’s production sale.
The Blakestown herd is based on exceptional females sourced almost exclusively from top French herds. Consequently famous cows like “Fatcha”, “Caroline”, “Sydney” and “Evaromey” are generously dispersed in the Blakestown pedigrees giving each of the animals on offer a large number of the top French qualification RR4 in their pedigrees. Easy calving and generous milk yields are achieved when these traits are deliberately selected for in successive generations.
The entire sale offering including the Charolais X replacement females was an excellent presentation of consistent cattle and it attracted a very large attendance.
