Charolais breeders have enjoyed one of their best ever Spring sale periods with a huge demand for quality Charolais bulls with good muscling and growth potential. At all the Society’s sales since last November average prices have been up (on the same sale period of the previous year) and the demand has been from Irish farmers who witnessed the outstanding prices achieved for Charolais at the weanling sales last Autumn. And, despite the large number of Charolais bulls already sold this Spring the final Society Spring sale in Tullamore (Saturday 16th) once again attracted a huge crowd and outstanding prices.

Top price of the sale, €7,000 and Male Championship went to new breeders and first time exhibitors, the Browne family from Tubber, Granard, Co. Longford. Their young bull, “Tobar Dimse” Champion of the show is by “Goldstar Volvo” and out of “Lyonsdemesne Velvet” by “Lyonsdemesne Pat”. With a muscle score of 132 and the top 5 star rating for Suckler Beef Value he was purchased by Maura Loftus, Crossmolina, Co. Mayo.
Reserve Male Championship went to Padraig Murphy, Castledermot, Co. Kildare for “Goldhill Cryptic” by “Endfield Plexus” and out of “Castlemartin Raddison” by “Kilmore Orlando”. He was purchased for €3,500 by Denis Beirne, Scramogue, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon.

Championship and Reserve in the small female section went to Josephine & Peter Burke, Suirside, Templemore, Co. Tipperary. Champion - “Suirside Daisy” is by “Roundhill Rocky” and Reserve Champion - “Suirside Clare” is by “Doonally New”. Both are out of home bred dams and were not sold.

Top prices included:
€5,200 to Edward Walsh, Aghafad, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, for a son of “Dromiskin Pedro” out of “Cornamuckla Una” by “Oscar”. A first prize winner, he was purchased by Geraldine Power, Kilbeg, Kill, Co. Waterford.
€5,050 to Joe Gilfillan, Kilmore House, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon for a son of “Indurain” out of a home bred dam “Kilmore Polly” by “Dovea Gin Tonic”. A second prize winner from the same class as the champion he was purchased by John Bawle, Portanure, Newtowncashel, Co. Longford.
€3,800 to Seamus McCann, Bettystown, Co. Meath for a son of “Burradon Talisman” out of “Goldsmith Angel” by “Doonally New”. A first prize winner in the youngest class of the day he was purchased by William Ferguson, Glebe, Derrygonnelly, Co. Fermanagh.
€3,550 to Mattie Kelly, Cloughbrack, Newbridge, Ballinalso, Co. Galway, for a son of “Lyonsdemese Tzar” out of a home bred dam by “Loch Ness”. He was purchased by John McDonnell, Dysart, Co. Roscommon.
€3,550 to Noel Galvin, Birdhill, Co. Tipperary, for a son of “Doonally New” out of “Blackweir Jane” by “Knockane Flare”. He was purchased by the Soilzarie Farm, Perthshire, Scotland.
€3,400 to Nigel Peavoy, Mountrath, Co. Laois for a son of “Doonally New” out of a home bred dam “Monagh Thelma” by “Pirate. He was purchased by Jean Monaghan, Rossavalley, Ballanaleck, Co. Fermanagh.
€3,250 to Richard O’Beirne, Adour, Tuam, Co. Galway, for a son of “Celtic Vichy” out of a home bred dam “Doon Suki” by “Doonally New”. He was purchased by Liam Casey, Firies, Killarney, Co. Kerry.
€3,050 to Michael Mullins, Cree, Kilrush, Co. Clare, for a son of “Doonally New” out of a home bred dam “Clohanmore Tanya” by “Cassina Padre”. He was purchased by Derek Healion, Spollinstown, Tullamore.
€3,050 to Seamus O’Dwyer, Templederry, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, for a son of “Enfield Newlook” out of a home bred dam “Castleottoway Sal” by “Hermes”. He was purchased by Michael Smyth, Slyduff, Daingean, Co. Offaly.
€3,050 to Joe Gilfillan, Kilmore House, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon for a son of “Enfield Plexus” out of a home bred dam “Kilmore Venusula” by “Kilmore Serenade”. He was purchased by Gerard Sheil, Ballacolla, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.
€3,000 to Luke Flanagan, Kilmacumskey, Elphin, Co. Roscommon for a son of “Pirate” out of a dam by “Doonally New”. He was purchased by Vincent Rafferty, Galbally, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone.

€3,000 to Benny Keating, Templemore, Co. Tipperary, for a son of “Ecrin” out of a home bred dam “Prime Athena” by “Derryharney Outstanding”. He was purchased by Kieran Dooley, Kilcoona, Headford, Co. Galway.

The Castlemartin Female Sale is in Tullamore on Saturday, 6th June, commencing at 2.00 p.m. On offer are fifty eight quality females including: In-calf heifers, Cows with Autumn and Spring born calves at foot, Dry cows and Yearling heifers.

 
 
Overall Male Champion “Tobar Dimse”, born March 25th , 2008. Bred by Liam Browne, Tubber, Granard, Co. Longford. Shown by Gerard Reynolds with very happy first time exhibitors the Browne family, Eilish with young son James, Joanne and Damien. Champion sold for €7,000.
