HUGE ATTENDANCE AT FIRST SALE OF THE AUTUMN.
10/11/2009

With ninety eight bulls catalogued, the first Society sale of the Autumn attracted a huge attendance to Tullamore and a very brisk trade resulting in a 70% clearance, a top price of €6,250 and an overall average of €2,794 for bulls.

Top price of €6,250 was paid for the Champion Male, “Clenagh Diego” bred by Michael Quin, Clenagh, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare. Weighing 960 kgs at eighteen months of age he is by “Dromiskin Viceroy” (by “Doonally New”) and out of a home bred dam “Clenagh Tammy” (by “Pirate”).
He has 4 stars for:
Suckler Beef Value,
Production of weanlings for export,
Quality beef carcases and for
Calving.
In addition he has a BLUP score of 124 for Muscle (top 10% of the breed). He was purchased by Gregory Reid, Killaleagh, Co. Armagh, N.I.

The demand for quality bulls was led by local Irish farmers who had witnessed the great weanling trade for Charolais over the last number of months and resulted in only three bulls being sold to Northern Ireland customers. Quality was the number one priority and farmers were prepared to pay well for the top bulls. The average price for the top 50% sold was €3,620 whilst the bottom 50% achieved €1,970

Reserve Champion bull “Baurnafea Duke” was bred by John Bambrick, Baurnafea, Castlewarren, Co. Kilkenny and sold for €3,600 to Martin Maher, Killucan, Co. Westmeath. By Johnny’s imported stock bull “Baccarat” and out of a home bred dam by “Carrefour Jewel” (by “Excellent”) he had 4 stars for ease of calving.

A Tully Performance Tested Bull, “Coolaghbaun Dexter” by “Lyonsdemesne Tzar” and out of a “Doonally New” dam sold for €4,300. Bred by new breeder, Dominick Jordan, Facefield, Claremorris, Co. Mayo he was purchased by Ian Smyth, The Ridge, Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow. He is a 5 star bull for Suckler Beef Value and has 4 stars for ease of calving.

The long journey from Donegal was well worthwhile for breeder, Pat McClean, Newtowncunningham, Lifford, Co. Donegal who received:
€4,200 for a son of his imported stock bull Roughan Viceroi (Major/Fatcha bloodline) out of a home bred dam by Kilcullen Oscar. He was purchased by Anthony Kelly, Tulla, Co. Clare.
