TULLAMORE 2010 - TOP OF €6,000

CHAROLAIS OFF TO A VERY GOOD START
AT FIRST SOCIETY PEDIGREE SALE OF THE YEAR.
With an average of €2,928 and a top price of €6,000, the trade for Charolais bulls got off to a very good start in Tullamore on Saturday. Despite the continuing bad weather conditions the sale attracted a huge attendance and achieved over 70% clearance.
Top price of the sale, €6,000, went to Pat McClean, Roughan, Newtowncunningham, Co. Donegal for ROUGHAN DESPERADO. By his imported stock bull “Roughan Unique” (also sire of the Senior Male Champion at the Christmas Cracker sale in Carrick) he is out of a home bred dam “Roughan United” by “Kilcullen Oscar”. He was purchased by Ian Townley, Ballykelly, Limavady, Co. Derry.
A first prize winner he had 5 stars for Suckler Beef Value and for the Production of Quality Weanlings and for Beef Carcasses. In addition he has 4 stars for Milk and Fertility and 3 stars for Calving Ease.
Championship sash went to William Cahill, Mullagh, Kells, Co. Meath for LISLIN DAN. By “Major” he is out of a home bred dam “Lislin Becca” by “Doonally New”. He was unsold having failed to reach his reserve but he will have a second outing to Tullamore for the Premier Show and Sale on March 27th.
Reserve Male Championship went to Angela & Gerard Brickley, Coolrain, Portlaoise, Co. Laois for their 13 months old bull CELTIC EMPEREUR. By “Pirate” he is out of a home bred dam “Celtic Ann” by “Celtic Utopia” With 4 stars for Ease of Calving and for Suckler Beef Value he was purchased by Frances McKernan, Castlebellingham, Co. Louth.
Other top prices:
€4,300 to Pat McClean, Newtowncunningham, Co. Donegal, for a son of another imported stock bull “Roughan Verygood”. He was purchased by Patrick Gargan, Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.
€3,700 to Ann-Marie Butler, Gooldscross, Cashel, for a son of “Prime Roberto”. He was purchased by Dennis Meade, Rathkenny, Navan.
€3,550 to Enda Kerley, Corcreaghy, Dundalk for a son of “Hollowtree Nicholas”. He was purchased by Michael Doyle, Ferns, Co. Wexford.
€3,500 to Seamus Nolan, Firoda, Castlecomer, for a son of “Texan-Gie” He was purchased by Mary Flynn, Loughrea, Co. Galway.
€3,500 to Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co. Galway for a son of “Prime Roberto”. He was purchased by Con McEnteggart, Killerley, Dundalk.
€3,500 to Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co. Galway, for a son of “Ashleigh Admiral”. He was purchased by Bernie Dempsey, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.
€3,400 to Declan Byrne, Keshcarrigan, Ck-on-Shannon, for a son of “Nelson”. He was purchased by Seamus O’Loughlin, Rathangan, Co. Kildare.
Price range for bulls was from €1,500 to €6,000.
In the very small female section (3 out of the 4 heifers catalogued were present) first prize went to Michael J. Quinn, Clenagh, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare for CLENAGH CLEO. By “Doonally New” and out of a home bred dam by “Organdi” she sold for €2,400 to Martin Flinter, Naas, Co. Kildare.
Second in her class “Dereskit Carla”, bred by Basil Bothwell, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan also sold for €2,400. By “Lyonsdemesne Tzar” and out of a home bred dam by “Hillcrest Rufus” she was purchased by Thomas Mullaley, Robertson, Naas, Co. Kildare.
The next Charolais Society show and sale is the PREMIER in Tullamore on Saturday 27TH March.
